The Park Across the Street

When we were looking for a house to rent for the next year, we decided amenities were key.  This house has turned out to be situated in the perfect spot for our family.  Just across the street sits a beautiful little city park that boasts a giant sledding hill, corn hole, porch swing, shelter house, playground, firepit and a connection to a multi-use path.  Did I mention that it also has a Little Free Library?  Well, it does!  I have already donated a book.  The sledding hill is quite steep and so fun to climb to the top.  Up there one can see for miles.  There is also a table with a chess/checkerboard. We are planning to use this park for our required PE minutes.  Who knows?  Perhaps we will find a house to buy in this neighborhood next year.  We won't go far, that is for certain.

A Good-Bye House Tour

The other day we had to get the house all tidy and clutter free to take pictures to send to a Realtor who was going to give us some comparables, so I thought I would share some of the pictures here as a sort of memory post.  We have had a lot of good memories here. I have never had a nicer home. Selling is bittersweet of course.  I don't want to go into that here.  I want to remember this house as just another example of God's great mercy to me.  He is an amazing God!!  As it turns out, I was already living in my dream house and now it is time to move back home.  Good-bye home sweet home.  You have been very good.  I am so very thankful.

Kitchen Love

Having a wood-burning stove in the kitchen is tops on my list of dream kitchen territory.

Old House Love

Adding another old house to my collection of dream houses.  I do wonder if I will ever be brave enough to own an old house.  We are not handy, nor do we have extra money to spend on a fixer.  I do love the idea of an old house, though.  Time will tell, right?

Dreamy

On my list of wants is an iron bed.  I think they are stunning. I can remember wanting one as a girl even.  I had a beautiful brass bed,as a young child, but it was impossible to keep shiny.I think that I should like one that is painted white.  I think they look best with a quilt, too, and lace curtains.  Perhaps one day, I will find my white iron bed.  Perhaps I will not.

Hodge Podge

These three pictures that I saw on Facebook really spoke to me,so I thought I'd share them here.

I love, love, love chickens!!

This old house has everything I like, a porch, symmetry, and a tin roof.  Amazing that it is left to rot.

Sunny Kitchens

I really like this kitchen's windows.  One can image a nice breeze from so many.  The sink is just like the one in my great grandmother's house.  I really wish I had a picture of her home on the inside before it was modernized and sold.  I wonder if I would like open shelves in a kitchen? Would they be hard to keep neat? Would things get dusty?  They look nice in pictures, but how do they function?

The House with Nobody in It

The House with Nobody in It
by Joyce Kilmer

Whenever I walk to Suffern along the Erie track
I go by a poor old farmhouse with its shingles broken and black.
I suppose I've passed it a hundred times, but I always stop for a minute
And look at the house, the tragic house, the house with nobody in it.
I never have seen a haunted house, but I hear there are such things;
That they hold the talk of spirits, their mirth and sorrowings.
I know this house isn't haunted, and I wish it were, I do;
For it wouldn't be so lonely if it had a ghost or two.
This house on the road to Suffern needs a dozen panes of glass,
And somebody ought to weed the walk and take a scythe to the grass.
It needs new paint and shingles, and the vines should be trimmed and tied;
But what it needs the most of all is some people living inside.
If I had a lot of money and all my debts were paid
I'd put a gang of men to work with brush and saw and spade.
I'd buy that place and fix it up the way it used to be
And I'd find some people who wanted a home and give it to them free.
Now, a new house standing empty, with staring window and door,
Looks idle, perhaps, and foolish, like a hat on its block in the store.
But there's nothing mournful about it; it cannot be sad and lone
For the lack of something within it that it has never known.
But a house that has done what a house should do,
  a house that has sheltered life,
That has put its loving wooden arms around a man and his wife,
A house that has echoed a baby's laugh and held up his stumbling feet,
Is the saddest sight, when it's left alone, that ever your eyes could meet.
So whenever I go to Suffern along the Erie track
I never go by the empty house without stopping and looking back,
Yet it hurts me to look at the crumbling roof and the shutters fallen apart,
For I can't help thinking the poor old house is a house with a broken heart.

*I posted this after coming across it today in our school readings.  This is exactly how I feel when I see an old abandoned house.

I Love Sears Homes

My great grandmother had a Sears home,a small bungalow built in the 1920's. It was a tiny, two bedroom home. So small,in fact, my grandmother did not have a bedroom, but slept in the living room as a girl.

I loved that home.  It's still around,but no longer in the family, sadly. However, the current owners are keeping it in good condition, so not all is lost.

I just love,love,love looking at these houses!  They are just so interesting. To think you could order a home, everything you needed, is really clever.  And they were made of excellent quality materials that would last almost forever.

There exist two reproduction Sears houses at a state park that we love. We enjoy walking through them.

And finally,  we visited one that belonged to Laura Ingalls Wilder at Rocky Ridge Farm in Missouri.  It was a gift from her daughter. Imagine!

I enjoy looking through the house plans here and here and here!

House Crush

I have a "thing" for houses with front porches.  This one is especially nice.  :)

Facebook Finds

{Just a few of my favorites from Facebook this past week.}

One of my most favorite pages from Facebook is Porch Sitting Union of America.  I love the pictures they post as well as their porch sitting attitude!  Here is my favorite one from this week.  I could do some serious porch sitting here!

And this house from Abandoned Everything is simply divine!  I love the windows up in the attic.  I can envision a little cozy room up there for reading or star gazing.  Someone just has to restore this gem!

These flowers from Country Living Magazine's page helped me keep my sights on spring.  I can't wait to make a bouquet from a cutting garden I have in mind.

Do you have any favorite Facebook pages to share?

Farmhouse Dreams

Photo credit:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Abandoned-Everything/496944700356415

See that beautiful house up there?  You might say it is my dream house. When I look at it, I see perfection. At least it is what I think is my dream, despite the fact that I am not a rehab expert, just an average HGTV viewer.  And I enjoy my modern conveniences, so there is the second conflict in this dream.  But it is fun to dream, and one never knows, it could happen!

Even a Good Change Can Be Hard

Will the Morning Glory bloom?

There are some big changes on my horizon, and as with many people, change is hard for me.  All of a sudden, it seems, I am asked to leave my comfort zone, and I struggle to embrace this as an opportunity for growth.  I had in my mind that we'd be moving when our lease is up, in a year and a half.  I am doing better now than when the idea to move first appeared.  But to be truthful, I would love to just hide away right now and not deal with all the stuff.  (I need a moving fairy to come!)
I am excited to be possibly buying a house instead of renting, although, this huge debt scares me.  I have grown fond of not having any debt!  I know a house will be different than consumer debt, of course.  I will have to work hard at not wanting more house than we can afford.  This will not be my dream house.  It will be the house we finish our family.  Perhaps the dream house will come later.  Perhaps it will not.  I am at peace with that part of myself, the part that dreams.
Most likely, we will be moving into a slightly smaller house, still spacious, I am sure.  But, we will still need to take a hard look at every object in our possession before we move.  Every.  Last.  Item.

I have made several trips to Good Will.  I have another load to take soon.  Depending on the house, we will purge furniture, too.  I am happy to let it all go.  The more the better, I say!  My kids are trying to go through their stuff as well.  We may be having the boys share a bedroom.  It could get tight.  But I know it will be OK.  Plenty of siblings share rooms.

I am looking forward to making a new place our home, our refuge.  I will be looking for a sunny backyard in which to grow a real garden.  I am looking forward to painting my daughter's room blue, a dream of hers.  If the loan all happens, I will call myself blessed for sure!  Until then, I purge on!!!
